The Do’s and Don’ts of Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling, including advanced treatments like SkinPen®, can deliver impressive skin rejuvenation results, but what you do in the days and weeks after your appointment matters just as much as the procedure itself. Following the right aftercare steps can protect your investment and help you get the most out of every session.

One of the most effective minimally invasive treatments for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines, minimizing scarring, and stimulating collagen production is microneedling. At Premier Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, board-certified plastic surgeon John Sarbak, MD offers SkinPen® microneedling — the first FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market — for patients seeking real, lasting skin improvement without significant downtime.

But the procedure is only half the equation. How you care for your skin in the hours, days, and weeks that follow can mean the difference between good results and great ones.

What to Expect After Microneedling Treatment

Most patients are able to resume their normal daily routines right after a SkinPen® or traditional microneedling treatment. You’ll likely notice some redness, similar to a mild sunburn, in the treated areas, which typically fades over a few days. This is often followed by a small amount of dryness and light peeling as your skin begins its renewal process.

Over the next two to four weeks, patients generally start to see real improvements in tone and texture. In most cases, results continue to develop over the following three months as the body produces new collagen and elastin. For optimal outcomes, a series of non-surgical treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is typically recommended, but your specific plan will ultimately depend on your individual skin goals and the concerns being addressed.

The Do’s: What to Follow After Microneedling

Do keep your skin hydrated. In the first 24 to 72 hours, your skin barrier is in recovery mode. You can usually use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to support healing and prevent excessive dryness. Hyaluronic acid serums can be especially beneficial during this window because they help attract and retain moisture without irritating sensitive post-treatment skin.
Do apply SPF every single day. Your skin will be more photosensitive after microneedling, making sun protection non-negotiable. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even if you’re mostly indoors. UV exposure immediately after treatment can lead to hyperpigmentation and undermine the results you’re working toward.
Do follow your provider’s post-care instructions closely. At Premier Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, we provide each patient with aftercare guidance tailored to their treatment and skin type. These aren’t generic suggestions, but specific and personalized instructions designed to support your unique healing process and help you see the best possible outcome.
Do stay well-hydrated and support your skin from within. Drink plenty of water in the days following treatment. Good hydration supports cellular repair and keeps your skin looking healthy as it heals.
Do be patient with peeling. Light flaking or peeling is a completely normal part of the process. It signals that your skin is renewing itself.

The Don’ts: What to Avoid After Microneedling

Don’t use active skin care ingredients for at least 48 to 72 hours. Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, and exfoliants can be too aggressive for freshly treated skin. Hold off on these until your provider gives you the green light, typically a few days post-treatment.
Don’t apply heavy makeup immediately after your session. Allow your skin to breathe and recover for at least 24 hours before reaching for foundation or concealer. Applying cosmetics too soon can clog microchannels in the skin and increase the risk of irritation or breakouts.
Don’t expose your skin to heat. Skip the sauna, steam room, hot yoga, and strenuous workouts that cause heavy sweating for at least 48 hours. Heat can worsen inflammation and slow the healing process.
Don’t pick at peeling skin. It’s tempting, but picking or rubbing flaking skin can disrupt the healing process and potentially cause scarring or uneven texture. Let your skin shed naturally and on its own timeline.
Don’t skip your follow-up treatments. A single microneedling session can produce noticeable improvements, but a series of sessions is where transformative results can really happen. Sticking to your recommended treatment schedule, usually spaced four to six weeks apart, ensures collagen stimulation builds cumulatively over time.

Microneedling and SkinPen® treatments represent a meaningful investment in your skin’s long-term health and appearance. With the right aftercare, you can protect that investment and give your skin every advantage in the healing and renewal process.
