Why Do I Have a Double Chin When I’m Not Overweight?

While the appearance of a double chin is often associated with being overweight, that may not be the case for all patients. Some patients with a skinnier look and body shape may find unwanted fullness or lax skin underneath their chin. There are a variety of potential causes for a double chin, both controllable and not, that can be addressed with different treatments.

A popular procedure for eliminating stubborn fat is liposuction. The surgical treatment is commonly performed on the neck, as well as other areas like the abdomen, thighs, and arms. Liposuction typically involves tiny incisions made where fatty tissue can be removed and then the skin can be recontoured for a sleeker look.

Another procedural approach is a neck lift, as a double chin can be caused by more than just excess fat. The surgery may be necessary for patients struggling with a double chin resulting from excess skin and focuses on smoothing the area underneath the chin, while also tightening lax muscles and tissue. Additionally, a neck lift can create a more youthful contour by lifting and pulling the skin taut.

For a non-surgical option, CoolSculpting® is an effective procedure for targeting fatty tissue. With innovative cooling technology, the treatment can reduce fullness for a more contoured appearance. The procedure involves freezing fat cells, causing them to break down and eventually expel from the body through the natural metabolic process.
